Covid-19: Africa with 260 more dead and 4860 more infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 260 more covid-19-associated deaths in the past 24 hours, for a total of 122,329 since the pandemic began, and 4860 new cases of infection, according to the latest official data on the continent.

According to the African Union Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of infected people in the organization's 55 member states is 4,578,902, and the number of people recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours is 7874, up to 4,125,114 since the start of the pandemic.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 1,972,138 people infected (a number that has been revised downward from the figure released 24 hours ago: 1,972,613) and 62,204 deaths associated with contracting the disease. Within this region, South Africa, the country worst hit by covid-19 on the continent, registers 1,584,961 cases and 54,452 deaths.

North Africa is the second hardest hit area, with 1,375,569 infected and 40,299 fatalities.

East Africa counts 608,718 infections and 11,430 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 460,606 and the number of deaths is 6080. In Central Africa, there are 161,871 cases of infection and 2576 deaths recorded.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths after South Africa, records 13,531 deaths and 230,713 infected, followed by Tunisia with 10,915 deaths and 312,747 cases of infection. Morocco counts 511,912 cases of infection and 9032 deaths associated with covid-19.

Also among the most affected countries are Ethiopia, with 3757 deaths and 258,813 infections, and Algeria, with 3280 deaths and 122,717 infected.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique records 815 deaths and 70,000 cases, followed by Angola (603 deaths and 27,133 cases of infection), Cape Verde (226 deaths and 24,548 cases), Equatorial Guinea (112 deaths and 7694 cases), Guinea-Bissau (67 deaths and 3736 cases) and Sao Tome and Principe (35 deaths and 2310 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 3,214,644 deaths worldwide, resulting from more than 153.4 million cases of infection, according to an assessment by the French news agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
