Police detain vietnamese accused of masterminding robberies of compatriots

The country's police authorities arrested, in Luanda, a Vietnamese citizen accused of being the mastermind behind several robberies of his countrymen in Luanda and in the provinces of Huambo and Cuando Cubango, the Criminal Investigation Service said Tuesday.

According to a press release, to which Lusa had access, besides the Vietnamese citizen, four Angolans were arrested for a crime of aggravated robbery, using a firearm, carried out in December last year, having the arrests occurred between the 4th and 5th of this month and announced on Tuesday.

The robbery, carried out at the behest of the arrested Vietnamese citizen, occurred on December 29, 2020 at the residence of his fellow countryman, in the Morro Bento neighborhood, in the city of Luanda. The perpetrators, under torture and threat of death, stole large sums of money, around 15,000 dollars and 20 million kwanzas.

The act also resulted in the theft of several items, including six cell phones, control and monitoring equipment of video surveillance cameras, watch and wire, both made of gold, valued at 9000 dollars and several pieces of clothing brand.

"The investigation ascertained the involvement of the group's principal in other crimes of robbery against Vietnamese citizens, in Luanda, Huambo, Cuando Cubango, and the participation of the other elements in armed robberies in bank exits, in 2014 and 2019, and two of those were set free last year," the statement said.

The detainees have already been presented to the Public Prosecutor's Office and are being held in preventive custody, while investigations continue to capture one of the members of the group on the run and determine other means, as well as items acquired with money stolen from the victim at the time of the events.
