What changes in the fourth period of the state of emergency in Angola?

The state of emergency will be renewed for at least another 15 days. However, the government will adopt some new measures: the wearing of masks will become mandatory in shops and informal markets will be open for a longer period of time.

On Friday morning, Parliament approved the third extension of the state of emergency because it considered that the risk of covid-19 contagion in the country was still high. However, this new model will bring about a relaxation of measures.

According to the Minister of State for the Security House of the President of the Republic, Pedro Sebastião, quoted by Angop, informal markets - which until now were only open three times a week - will be open from Tuesday to Saturday, between 6am and 1pm.

The use of masks is now compulsory in commercial establishments and domestic workers will be able to go to their places of service. However, in the latter case, employers must guarantee all safety standards so that workers can carry out their work without risk of contamination.

Provincial movement will continue to be allowed, with the exception of Luanda, which will continue to be fenced off through a sanitary fence. Leisure travel and religious services are also still prohibited.

Schools will remain closed and quarantine will also be compulsory. Testing of people in institutional quarantine also remains mandatory.

Finally, Pedro Sebastião said the government intends to find a middle ground between health and economy, in order to allow people, especially the most vulnerable, to return to the routine. He stressed that this return will have to be adapted and will always have to comply with the new health habits (use of masks, social distancing and frequent hygiene of places and hands).

The new state of emergency will come into force at midnight on 11 May and will continue until midnight on 24 May.
