Death toll in Africa rises to 2290 in over 63,000 cases

The number of deaths from covid-19 in Africa rose this Monday to 2290, with more than 63,000 infected in 53 countries, according to the latest statistics on the pandemic in that continent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours the number of deaths rose from 2223 to 2290, while those infected with covid-19 rose from 60,657 to 63,325.

The total number of patients recovered increased from 20,792 to 21,821.

North Africa remains the region most affected by the disease, with 1264 dead and 22,290 infected with covid-19.

In West Africa there are 406 deaths and 18,400 infections, while Southern Africa accounts for 213 deaths and records 10,721 cases, almost all concentrated in a single country, South Africa (10,015).

The pandemic affects 53 of Africa's 55 countries and territories, with six countries - South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and Ghana - concentrating about half of new coronavirus infections and more than two-thirds of deaths associated with the disease.

Egypt is the country with the most deaths (525), in 9400 cases, followed by Algeria, which has 502 deaths and 5723 infected.

South Africa became the third country with the most deaths (194) and exceeded 10,000 deaths on Sunday, remaining the country with the most cases of covid-19 (10,015).

Morocco has 188 fatalities and 6063 cases, Nigeria has 143 deaths and 4399 cases, while Ghana has 22 deaths and 4263 infected.

Only Lesotho and the Sahrawi Republic remain without reporting cases of covid-19.

Among the Lusophone African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the highest number of infections, with 726 cases, having announced on Saturday the third death due to the disease.

Cape Verde has 246 infections and two deaths and Sao Tome and Principe has 212 cases and five deaths.

Mozambique has 91 infected patients and Angola has 45 confirmed cases of covid-19 and two deaths.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has had 439 positive cases of infection and four deaths for several days, according to Africa CDC.

On a global level, according to an assessment by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than 280,000 deaths and infected more than four million people in 195 countries and territories. More than 1.3 million patients have been considered cured.
