Covid-19: death toll in Africa rises to 1843 in over 47,000 cases

The number of deaths caused by covid-19 in Africa rose to 1843 this Tuesday, with more than 47,000 cases of the disease recorded in 53 countries, according to the latest statistics on the pandemic in that continent.

According to the African Union's Disease Control and Prevention Center (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours, the death toll has risen from 1801 to 1843, while infections have increased from 44,483 to 47,118.

The total number of recovered patients rose from 14,921 to 15,587.

North Africa remains the region most affected by the disease, with 1127 deaths and 17,703 registered cases.

In West Africa, there are 303 deaths and 12,991 infections.

Southern Africa accounts for 152 deaths, in 7697 cases of covid-19.

The pandemic affects 53 of the 55 countries and territories in Africa, with five countries - South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Nigeria - concentrating about half of the infections by the new coronavirus and more than two thirds of the deaths associated with the disease.

Egypt has 436 deaths and 6813 infected, South Africa has 138 deaths and 7220 infected patients, while Morocco has 179 fatalities and 5053 cases and Nigeria has 93 deaths and 2802 infected.

The highest number of fatalities is recorded in Algeria (465), in 4648 infected patients.

Only Lesotho and the Saharawi Republic continue to not report cases of covid-19.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau is the one with the most infections, with 413 cases, including the Prime Minister in power and three more members of his Government, and records a death

Cape Verde has 175 cases and two deaths, while São Tomé and Príncipe has 174 cases and 3 deaths and the Government decreed compulsory confinement on Monday.

Mozambique has 80 infected patients and Angola has 35 confirmed cases of covid-19 and two dead.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has had 315 positive cases of infection and one dead for several days, according to Africa CDC.

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 250,000 deaths and infected more than 3.5 million people in 195 countries and territories.

More than a million patients were considered cured.
