Number of deaths in Africa exceeds 1800 in more than 44,000 cases

The number of deaths caused by covid-19 in Africa surpassed 1800 this Monday, with more than 44,000 cases of the disease recorded in 53 countries, according to the most recent statistics on the pandemic in that continent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours the number of deaths has risen from 1754 to 1801, while infections have increased from 42,713 to 44,483.

The total number of patients recovered rose from 14,152 to 14,921.

North Africa remains the region most affected by the disease, with 1112 deaths and 16,926 registered cases.

In West Africa, there are 288 deaths and 11,871 infections.

Southern Africa accounts for 145 deaths in 7241 cases of covid-19.

The pandemic affects 53 out of 55 countries and territories in Africa, with five countries - South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Nigeria - accounting for about half of new coronavirus infections and more than two-thirds of deaths associated with the disease.

Egypt has 429 deaths and 6465 infections, South Africa has 131 deaths and 6783 infections, while Morocco has 174 deaths and 4903 cases and Nigeria has 87 deaths and 2558 infections.

The highest number of deaths is in Algeria (463), with 4474 infected patients.

Only Lesotho and the Sahrawi Republic continue to report cases of covid-19.

Among Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the highest number of infections, with 257 cases, including the Prime Minister in power and three other members of his government, and one death.

Cape Verde has 165 cases and two deaths.

Sao Tome and Principe has 3 dead and registered a large increase of infected to 161, announced on Saturday by the Government, which could not clarify, however, if this number already includes the 23 cases accumulated until then.

Mozambique has 80 infected patients and Angola has 35 confirmed cases of covid-19 and two dead.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has had 315 positive cases of infection and one dead for several days, according to Africa CDC.

On a global level, according to an assessment by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than 245,000 deaths and infected more than 3.4 million people in 195 countries and territories.

More than one million patients have been considered cured.
