Police detained nine national and Democratic Republic of Congo motorcycle taxi drivers allegedly involved in street sweeping and barricading on the main thoroughfares of the city of Soyo, northern Zaire province.

:

According to a note from the local police, a group of 90 people, mostly motorcycle taxi drivers, protested against the police force when they were prevented from carrying out the activity, banned since the period of validity of the state of emergency, declared on 27 March and until May 25, within the scope of measures to prevent and combat covid-19.

“They asked the National Police for their satisfaction with the reasons for not being allowed to use the taxi service at this stage of the calamity state. Dissatisfied with the authorities' response, they decided to take action, putting barricades on some streets in the urban area and in the periphery ”, said the police note.

In light of the situation, the document said, law enforcement and security forces detained nine citizens, allegedly the main mentors of the action, and seized 92 motorcycles abandoned on the spot by the offenders.

The detainees were present at the Public Prosecutor's Office, while the police are taking action to capture the rest of those involved.

The state of public calamity has been in effect since the 26th of this month, and the mototaxi activity is subject to specific regulations.
