Ex-military defy state of emergency and demonstrate in Luanda

About 200 ex-military personnel who were demobilized demonstrated this Tuesday in Luanda, defying the rules of the state of emergency that has been in force in the country since 27 March due to the covid-19 pandemic, confirmed Lusa to police sources.

The demonstrators who walked some streets of Maianga, in the centre of Luanda, are part of a group of ex-military of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) who for some years have claimed to be part of the National Police.

According to the same sources, there were no arrests.

Last year, the ex-military, who have been demobilized from the FAA since 2014, held two demonstrations in the capital to demand entry to the National Police, and another protest took place in Huambo province, with the same purpose.

In January this year, the commander general of the National Police, Paulo de Almeida, called on the former combatants to stop demonstrating, considering this negative behavior to enter that force.

According to Paulo de Almeida, the integration of ex-military personnel into the police is not automatic, nor is it a transfer, but it obeys mechanisms and processes of ascertainment and selection.

Angola declared a state of emergency to contain the spread of the covid-19 epidemic for the first time on 27 March, having already extended the decision twice.

The country currently has 35 positive cases of infection with the new coronavirus, including two deaths.
