According to a post on the presidency's Facebook page, João Lourenço was at the headquarters of the Vatican diplomatic mission in Luanda (Nunciature) on Thursday to present condolences to the apostolic nuncio of Angola and São Tomé, Monsignor Kryspin Dubiel.
The President traveled the following day to the Italian capital, where he met with the President of Gabon, Brice Oligui Nguema, before the funeral ceremonies. According to the government, the meeting addressed bilateral relations between the two countries.
Foreign Minister Téte António was also present at Pope Francis' funeral, the ministerial body said in a statement.
The funeral of Pope Francis, who died on Monday, took place in St. Peter's Basilica, followed by a procession that took the body to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
The final farewell to the leader of the Catholic Church brought together between 150 and 170 foreign delegations, including fifty heads of state and government, as well as representatives of international organizations.
Among the world leaders present at the funeral ceremonies were Presidents Donald Trump of the United States of America, Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, Emmanuel Macron of France, Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany and Xi Jinping of China.
Also present were the Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and other Portuguese-speaking countries such as the Brazilian Lula da Silva, the Cape Verdean José Maria das Neves and the Timorese José Ramos-Horta.
PR leaves Vatican for official visit to Egypt
Immediately after Francisco's funeral, João Lourenço left for the city of Cairo, Egypt, for a two-day official visit to the country, which begins this Tuesday.
President João Lourenço's visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt is in response to an invitation from President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi, with whom he will meet on Tuesday morning, before witnessing, together, the signing of bilateral cooperation agreements in various fields.
Another highlight of João Lourenço's mission in Cairo will be a meeting on Wednesday with the Egyptian business community to assess investment prospects in both countries.
It is worth remembering that last March (3rd, 4th and 5th), the President of the Republic was in the Egyptian capital representing the African Union - which he presides - at an Arab League summit dedicated to the reconstruction of Gaza.
