DRC: conversation between PR and Togolese counterpart served to “pass on Angola’s accumulated experience”

Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé was received in Luanda this Wednesday by his Angolan counterpart, João Lourenço, to discuss the case on the conflict in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRCongo), the head of Angolan diplomacy said.

Foreign Minister Téte António said that the two heads of state met to exchange information about the mediation process between DR Congo and Rwanda, which Angola led, without success.

Faure Gnassingbé was recently appointed by the African Union (AU) as mediator in the conflict affecting eastern DR Congo, following a proposal by João Lourenço.

"Today's conversation [Wednesday] was precisely about providing all the information (...), but also passing on the accumulated experience (...) of Angola, not only about this conflict, but of the Great Lakes Region, which continues to assume many responsibilities", said Téte António in statements to the Angolan Public Television (TPA).

"Whenever necessary, the new mediator will resort to Luanda", since Angola currently holds the presidency of the AU, "but also because of the accumulated memory on this dossier", he added.

Resource-rich eastern DR Congo, which borders Rwanda, has been plagued by conflict for 30 years. However, the crisis has intensified in recent months with the capture, in January and February, of the main cities of Goma and Bukavu by the rebel group March 23 Movement (M23), supported by Rwanda.

The escalation of the conflict has displaced around 1.2 million people in these provinces, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Since 1998, eastern DR Congo has been mired in conflict fueled by rebel militias and the army, despite the presence of a UN peacekeeping mission.
