The Presidency of the Republic, in a statement to which VerAngola had access, informs that this visit takes place within the scope of the peace process in the DRC.
"The President of the Republic of Togo, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, recently appointed by the African Union as mediator for the conflict in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo, arrives tomorrow [Wednesday] in Luanda for a working visit, as part of the aforementioned process", reads the note.
In Luanda, Gnassingbé will hold a meeting with João Lourenço.
"In the Angolan capital, the Togolese statesman will meet with the acting president of the African Union, João Lourenço," the presidency said.
It is worth remembering that, at the beginning of this month, the President of the Republic proposed his Togolese counterpart as the new mediator of the conflict in the DRC, a role previously played by João Lourenço.
Last month, Angola – which assumed the presidency of the African Union in February this year – announced that it was giving up its role as mediator.
After this announcement, the head of state said that abandoning this mediation role "is not a sign of enmity towards absolutely anyone."
