Unitel has around 20 million users

Approximately 20 million customers are included in the Unitel database, which was visited this Thursday by deputies assigned to the Health, Education, Higher Education, Science and Technology Commission (6th CTE).

According to a statement from Parliament, to which VerAngola had access, the company, which has been operating in the national market for more than 20 years, has "in its database around 20 million customers, distributed across the country's 18 provinces". Furthermore, in order to ensure the "operability of services", Unitel "has the technical support of 950 technicians and a Network Supervision Center that operates 24 hours a day, on a three-shift basis".

Regarding the visit, the parliamentary delegation, led by the vice-president, Nuno Dala, was received by the president of the Board of Directors (PCA) of Unitel, Aguinaldo Jaime.

On the occasion, deputy Narciso Benedito said that the visit served, essentially, to investigate "the conformity and articulation between Unitel's action plans and the programs and guidelines of the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technologies and Social Communication".

Quoted in the note, the deputy said that they were able to verify the equipment and technologies made available to operators, infrastructures that enable "the circulation of all communication", and also highlighted the fact that the operator "relies, for the most part, on a workforce of young national graduates who attended university".

"As for the benefits of Unitel Money for the population, the finding is that it will increase security and direct access to various services, although financial literacy is not yet a reality" in the country, adds the document.

Unitel's PCA considered the strategic sector important for the development of Angola, adding, however, that the country's macroeconomic scenario is "challenging and that exchange rate fluctuations negatively affect the company", especially its investments.

He also took the opportunity to recall that the services made available by Unitel "are charged in national currency", while "all replacement equipment" is obtained in foreign currency, which ends up having a negative impact on revenue.

"Despite the financial constraints, Unitel seeks to satisfy its customers. The mobile phone company has business and home services available to its users, given the arrival of cable-free telephony and the introduction of fiber optics", reads in the note.

Aguinaldo Jaime also mentioned that the company has not updated the price list since 2016, as it is in the "fixed price regime", which ended up leading to dialogue with the authorities to "find solutions to overcome the challenges".

"The company's situation may worsen due to the new 10 percent rate on foreign exchange transactions", the note states. However, although there are constraints, the person in charge assured that the operator will continue "to pursue excellence in this area of business life".

It should be noted that, at the moment, the company has 175 stores nationwide, as well as "more than 6000 reseller agents and more than 60 thousand people make a living from this business". Furthermore, it should be noted that the company currently offers 5G technology services to its users.
