Afrobasket 2025: preparations start within a week

It will be within a week that preparations will begin for the 31st edition of the African senior men's basketball championship (Afrobasket 2025) – which will be hosted by the country –, informed Rui Falcão, Minister of Youth and Sports.

Therefore, as part of the championship, emissaries from FIBA Africa will pay a visit to Angola next week, writes Angop.

Rui Falcão also said that the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB) "is working and in a few days" they will "commit themselves to making the best Afrobasket".

According to the head of the Youth and Sports portfolio, the competition could be played in two more provinces, along with Luanda. Thus, according to Angop, in addition to Namibe, the provinces of Benguela and Huíla are also in the running to host the competition.

The Minister of Youth and Sports also mentioned that Namibe – where he was recently on a working day – is already experienced when it comes to organizing events, a fact that was proven when the Welwitschia Mirabilis Pavilion hosted, in 2013, one of the Championship series of Roller Hockey World.

Quoted by Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA), he said he had already given instructions to the FAB with a view to holding the championship in more than one province: "I have already given this indication to the federation (...), if it is possible for us to two or three provinces participating, including Luanda, would be very good. It will depend on the objective technical conditions so that we can hold the games in accordance with the regulations".

Remember that it was last month that FIBA Africa confirmed that Angola would host Afrobasket next year.

This will be the fourth time that the country will host this event, after having hosted the 1989, 1999 and 2007 editions.

Angola has not won this continental competition since 2013, played in Côte d'Ivoire.
