The second edition of the Angola Startup Summit 2023 opened its doors this Thursday (April 27), in a ceremony attended by the Minister of Economy and Planning, Mário Caetano João. As part of the event, one of its sponsors, namely KPMG, committed to offering one of the winning startups an access ticket to the Web Summit in Portugal.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Economy and Planning, which VerAngola had access to, Mário João Caetano was responsible for cutting the ribbon, a moment that marked the opening of this edition of the event, which will run until the 29th of April, at the Instituto Superior Politécnico de Tecnologia e Ciências (ISPTEC).

"The Minister of Youth and Sports, Palmira Barbosa, Ambassador Luvualo, and Secretaries of State from various sectors, among other entities, honored the event that has more than 130 national startups, and has as its motto: Technological Innovation as a Vector of Immersion of Startups in Angola", reads the statement.

Speaking at the opening, the head of the Economy and Planning portfolio highlighted the importance of the event, "as it is a summit aimed at youth, who are the largest fringe of Angolan society".

According to the statement, the minister also stated that "this market segment" has a "fundamental role in the economy", as it is responsible "for generating jobs, stimulating innovation and boosting economic growth by providing goods and services".

"The main highlight of this edition is the intention to finance three startups via venture capital and crowdfunding, incubate 10 startups, and accelerate 10. Additionally, the Bank of Commerce and Industry has available 10 million kwanzas to finance the participant to present the best technological solution for agribusiness", says the note.

In addition, the government will also launch challenges to startups in this edition, namely the MEP Challenge, the Executive Challenge, and the Governador Challenge.

Still within the scope of the event, one of its sponsors will take a national startup to the Web Summit in Portugal.

This is KPMG – one of the official sponsors of the Angola Startup Summit 2023 – which has undertaken "to offer one of the winning startups an access ticket to the Web Summit, an event that brings together more than 70,000 companies that are at the forefront of the industry of technology", says another communiqué from the Ministry of Economy and Planning, which VerAngola had access to.

According to the note, the national winner will have the "possibility of pitching his idea or project at the KPMG Portugal stand, thus having the opportunity to attract investment or support".

The Web Summit concerns one of the "most important world events in technology, entrepreneurship and innovation", and will take place in Portugal, between the 13th and 16th of November.
