Luanda hosts exhibition by Portuguese-Angolan artist Pedro Pires as part of the Portuguese Language Day

The Luso-Angolan artist Pedro Pires opens on Thursday, as part of the celebrations dedicated to the Day of the Portuguese Language, an exhibition called “A Vida Longa das Linhas Retas”.

:

The exhibition, with free admission until the 26th of May, is part of the program of celebrations that Camões - Centro Cultural Português dedicates to the Day of the Portuguese Language, which is celebrated on the 5th of May, and marks the solo return of the artist to capital, after several years of growing presence in the international artistic circuit, indicates a note from the institution.

The exhibition has the artistic direction and production of the Portuguese-Angolan contemporary art gallery THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE, the first African gallery in Portugal “which, while maintaining a deep connection with Africa, does not focus exclusively on Portuguese-speaking circles, but mainly on emerging aesthetics of cultural artistic productions of the Global South”, adds the note.

With a set of 23 works, mostly unpublished, of sculpture and intervention on paper, the appropriation of the title of the eponymous essay by Wolfgang Döpcke, "The long life of straight lines," (1999), provides a critical analysis of the stereotyped narratives that involve the definition of border lines in Africa, in an exhibition with curatorial text by Luísa Santos.

“The exhibition provides visitors with the opportunity to explore a unique artistic production, recognized for its recurring use of mechanisms for appropriating objects and ideas, but, above all, their contexts, in favor of building concrete reflections on established narratives and the renegotiation of a original meaning through the lens of contemporary art and its conceptual frameworks”, stresses the note.

Pedro Pires, through reference to the work of Wolfgang Döpcke, makes a reflection that his work proposes, for a long time, around the notion of frontier and fragmentation of identity.
