Portuguese Navy ship leaves this Monday for a new mission in Africa and will pass through Angola

The patrol vessel “Viana do Castelo” leaves on Monday, from the Lisbon Naval Base, for a new mission within the scope of the “Mar Aberto” initiative, on the west African coast, carrying 15 tons of donated goods, announced this Saturday the Navy.

The ship will transport material from donations and solidarity actions carried out by various entities, for the populations of the countries where it will travel within the scope of the mission: Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, Ghana and Cape Verde.

This mission, according to the Navy, has been "relevant in deepening and maintaining cooperation relations" in the field of Defense with navies and coast guards on the African continent.

The NRP "Viana do Castelo" will continue with cooperation, naval diplomacy and support for foreign policy, until June.

The Minister of National Defence, Helena Carreiras, will be present at the departure ceremony, which will also be attended by the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Gouveia e Melo.

The "Viana do Castelo" is commanded by Frigate Captain Hugo Miguel Paciência da Silva and has a garrison of 46 soldiers.
