According to the official, cited by Angop, this initiative has significantly improved citizens' access to the Internet, especially for students who now have greater ease in conducting academic research.
For now, "Angola Online" has a total of 111 distribution points, spread over nine provinces: Namibe, Luanda, Huíla, Huambo, Cunene, Kwanza Sul, Bié, Benguela and Bengo. However, the official said that the Ministry for Telecommunication, Information Technology and Communication's aim is to extend this service to other provinces, with schools on its list of priorities.
The number of Internet service users is still below the expected. In a total of about 30 million inhabitants, seven million are fixed Internet users and 15 million are mobile users. For this reason, the official explained that this Government plan foresees the improvement of these numbers, through the application of policies that improve the population's access to the Internet.
Speaking at the end of a visit to the central plateau of Angola, Matias Borges also referred that the Government intends to improve the submarine cables as well as the fiber optic network.
He also stressed that more media libraries with rooms with computers connected to the Internet are being built to facilitate access, especially for young people, to the online world.
