Death toll from adulterated liquor in Luanda rises to 10

The death toll from the ingestion of an adulterated "caipirinha" made with fuel, on the outskirts of Luanda, has risen to 10, according to local authorities cited by Radio Nacional de Angola.

The case that occurred in the neighborhood of Caop, in Viana, Angolan public radio reported this Monday, involves a toxic mixture of drinks which was given the name "bad luck caipirinha", composed of "boss's water" [a distilled craft drink made of sugar and yeast], capassarinho [a fruit with hallucinogenic effect] and JET A1 fuel for airplanes.

According to information gathered by RNA from the administration of the municipality of Viana, which confirmed the existence of two more fatalities to add to the inner balance.

The victims are aged between 14 and 59 and among them is the supplier of the ingredients.

The seller of the drink has already been arrested by the police along with three companions.

In addition to the 10 fatalities, other people have been referred to Josina Machel and Capalanca hospitals.

The coordinator of the Residents' Commission, António Costa, said that the drink causes symptoms such as headache, body aches, nausea, general malaise, difficulty walking, and loss of vision.
