In a statement, the executive secretariat of the Standing Committee of the Political Commission of UNITA considered "a great tragedy" the damage caused by the heavy rains that fell on the capital on Monday for seven hours.
"The executive secretariat of the Standing Committee of the UNITA Political Commission urges the executive at central and provincial level to assume its responsibilities in assisting the victims of the rains and the definitive correction of the factors that aggravated these occurrences, such as the weak collection of solid waste and the consequent clogging of rainwater drainage channels," the statement said.
The largest opposition party also highlighted the need for better urban structuring to accommodate populations in safe areas, preventing them from building on the water lines themselves.
A provisional balance sheet from the Civil Protection and Fire Services indicated that 14 people died as a result of the rains, more than 8,000 people were left homeless, in addition to thousands of floods, falling trees, fallen streetlights, impassable roads, and a broken bridge, among other damages.
