This message of condolences from Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to João Lourenço was published on the official website of the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic on the Internet.

"It was with sadness that I became aware of the tragic consequences of the heavy rains that affected Luanda and resulted in the loss of human lives, a high number of displaced people and significant material damage", the text reads.

The Portuguese head of state transmits, "at this difficult time", on behalf of him and the Portuguese people, "the most heartfelt condolences to all those affected by this catastrophe".

On Monday, torrential rains caused chaos in Luanda, leaving a trail of destruction, with deaths, submerged houses, flooded streets and heaps of garbage in the capital's bay.

The provisional balance sheet presented on Monday by the civil protection and fire service pointed to 14 dead, hundreds of houses flooded and others partially collapsed, and it is estimated that more than 8000 people were left homeless as a result of the rains.
