Covid-19: Africa with 205 more dead and 9123 more infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 205 more covid-19-associated deaths in the past 24 hours, for a total of 115,790 since the pandemic began, and 9123 new cases of infection, according to the latest official data on the continent.

According to the African Union Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of those infected in the organization's 55 member states is 4,359,635 and those recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours is 8311, for a total of 3,914,719 since the start of the pandemic.

Southern Africa remains the worst affected region, recording 1,931,018 infected and 60,824 deaths associated with being infected with the disease. Within this region, South Africa, the country hardest hit by covid-19 on the continent, registers 1,559,113 cases and 53,356 deaths.

North Africa is the second hardest hit area, with 1,292,190 infected and 37,164 deaths.

East Africa counts 547,333 infections and 9820 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 444,779 and the number of deaths is 5843. Central Africa counts 144,315 cases of infection and 2319 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths after South Africa, records 12,487 deaths and 211,307 infected, followed by Tunisia, with 9332 deaths and 272,940 cases of infection. Morocco records 502,277 cases of infection and 8909 deaths associated with covid-19.

Also among the most affected countries are Algeria, with 3134 deaths and 118,553 infected, and Ethiopia, with 3208 deaths and 230,944 infections.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique records 791 deaths and 68,792 cases, followed by Angola (554 deaths and 23,549 cases of infection), Cape Verde (182 deaths and 19,005 cases), Equatorial Guinea (106 deaths and 7219 cases), Guinea-Bissau (66 deaths and 3680 cases) and Sao Tome and Principe (35 deaths and 2255 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 2,947,319 deaths worldwide, resulting from more than 136.5 million cases of infection, according to an assessment by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
