Covid-19: Africa with 261 more dead and 10,419 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded an additional 261 deaths associated with covid-19 in the last 24 hours, for a total of 114,344 since the start of the pandemic, and 10,419 new cases of infection, according to the most recent official data on the continent.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of infected people in the 55 member states of the organization is 4,291,017 and that of those recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours is 12,355, to a total of 3,858,461 since the start of the pandemic.

Southern Africa continues to be the most affected region, with 1,918,535 infected and 60,385 dead associated with contagion with the disease. In this region, South Africa, the country hardest hit by the covid-19 on the continent, has 1,552,853 cases and 53,032 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area, with 1,269,903 infected and 36,509 fatalities.

East Africa accounts for 525,276 infections and 9,444 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 439,417 and that of deaths is 5770. Central Africa accounts for 137,886 cases of infection and 2,236 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, registers 12,253 deaths and 206,510 infected, followed by Tunisia, with 9039 deaths and 263,043 cases, and then Morocco, which registers 499,025 cases of infection and 8865 deaths associated with covid-19.

Among the countries most affected are Algeria, with 3112 dead and 117,787 infected, and Ethiopia, with 3025 fatalities and 219,381 infections.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique records 785 deaths and 68,292 cases, followed by Angola (547 deaths and 22,885 cases of infection), Cape Verde (173 deaths and 18,023 cases), Equatorial Guinea (104 deaths and 7059 cases) , Guinea-Bissau (66 deaths and 3662 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (35 deaths and 2244 cases).
