Covid-19: Africa with 1158 deaths and more than 23 thousand infections

The number of covid-19 deaths in Africa has risen to 1158 in the past few hours, with more than 23,000 registered cases of the disease in 52 countries, according to the most recent statistics on the continent's pandemic.

According to the bulletin of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours, the number of registered deaths has risen from 1119 to 1158, while infections have increased from 22,275 to 23,505.

The number of patients reported as recovered is 5833.

North Africa remains the region most affected by the disease with 10,052 cases, 817 deaths and 2326 recovered patients.

Southern Africa accounts for 70 deaths in 3525 cases of covid-19 and 969 recovered patients.

In West Africa, there are 5474 infections, 140 deaths and 1564 recovered patients.

The pandemic affects 52 of Africa's 55 countries and territories, with five countries - South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Cameroon - concentrating more than half of the infections and deaths associated with the new coronavirus.

South Africa remains the country with the most cases - 3525 and 58 deaths - but the largest number of fatalities is recorded in Algeria, 384 out of 2718 infected.

Egypt has 3333 infected and 250 killed, while Morocco totals 3064 cases and 143 fatalities.

Cameroon accounts for 42 deaths out of 1163 infected.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Cape Verde leads in number of infections, with 67 cases and one death.

Guinea-Bissau counts 50 people infected with the new coronavirus, Mozambique has 39 reported cases of the disease and Angola has 24 cases of covid-19 and two deaths.

São Tomé and Príncipe remains unrecorded, after first identifying four positive cases that were not confirmed in the second analysis.

In Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), 79 positive cases of infection are confirmed.
