Angolan HIV patients start receiving medication at home

The Angolan Network of Non-Governmental Organizations to Fight HIV / AIDS (ANASO) launched a project that aims to support HIV-positive people in times of pandemic caused by the covid-19.

:

Covid-19 is especially dangerous for HIV / AIDS patients - taking into account the fragility of the carriers' imonulogic system - with more than 300,000 citizens in Angola diagnosed with the syndrome.

To the DW, Francisco Simões, executive secretary of ANASO, explained that at this moment people living with the disease are at home and that is where they must stay. However, and taking into account the complications caused by the disease, this group of patients at risk needs regular medication. Several experts report that HIV-positive people not treated with antiretroviral drugs are at a greater risk of contracting infections, as is the case with covid-19.

In this way, the "Corrente de Vida" project was created, which guarantees the continuity of access to healthcare for these citizens. The association started by identifying and registering the people who may need support, and "after being registered, the health units where these people are monitored, where these people take their medication, and the doctors who accompany them will be identified".

In this follow-up, and through the association, these patients will thus be able to receive their medication at home, avoiding going out on the street. ANASO will work together with the National Institute for the Fight against AIDS and with the health authorities in the delivery of medicines.

Francisco Simões ensures that the project has already started and that all HIV-positive people can be supported, simply by contacting the network not only in Luanda but in any other of the country's 17 provinces.
