Covid-19: Africa records 209 deaths and over 5,000 confirmed cases

Senegal and the Republic of Congo have announced the first deaths due to the new coronavirus, according to the latest bulletin from the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control of the African Union (Africa CDC), issued during Wednesday afternoon.

According to the document, there are now 209 deaths announced due to the disease caused by the new coronavirus in the African continent, which totals at least 5,940 cases of infection since the beginning of the pandemic.

With the first cases of the disease declared on Tuesday in Sierra Leone and Burundi, there are now 49 African countries and territories with registration of the disease.

Africa CDC also has 426 recovered patients, including the first recovered patient in Equatorial Guinea.

So far, no cases have been reported in Sao Tome and Principe, South Sudan, Comoros, the Sahrawi Republic, Lesotho and Malawi.

Thus, Sao Tome and Principe is the only Portuguese-speaking country without any confirmed cases.

Angola has confirmed seven cases of new coronavirus infection, with two deaths associated with covid-19, Cape Verde has six cases and one death, Mozambique has confirmed eight, the same number as Guinea-Bissau.

The bulletin does not yet account for the increase in cases in Angola and Mozambique.

Angola registered an increase to eight cases, one more than yesterday, while Mozambique detected two new cases since yesterday, bringing to 10 the total of infections since the beginning of the disease.

In Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, 15 positive cases of infection with the new coronavirus have been confirmed.

The new coronavirus, responsible for the covid-19 pandemic, has already infected more than 905,000 people worldwide, of whom almost 46,000 have died.

Of the cases of infection, at least 176,500 are considered cured.

After the outbreak broke out in China in December, it spread worldwide, leading the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a pandemic situation.
