Covid-19: Coach Ivo Campos praises speed of state of emergency

The Portuguese Ivo Campos, coach of the Interclube of Angola, praised the fact that six days ago the state of emergency was decreed by the government due to the covid-19 pandemic, advising citizens to isolate themselves.

"I think we are doing the right thing, the measures here in Angola have been done a long time in advance and I think that will be our salvation, things that in Europe they didn't do," the football coach, who has been in Angola for eight years, told Lusa this Thursday.

Angola, with eight confirmed cases of infected people and two fatalities, entered this Thursday into the sixth of the 15 days extendable state of emergency, which aims to contain the spread of the virus.

The ban on the movement of people and vehicles on public roads in order to avoid agglomerations are some of the measures which, however, have been constantly violated by citizens, according to the authorities.

For the 39-year-old Portuguese coach, in social isolation at home with his family, "greater rigidity is needed" for citizens who in Luanda and other parts of the country insist on going out on the streets.

Worried about the spread of the new coronavirus in Europe, especially in Portugal, where his parents live, and in Germany, where his sister lives, Ivo Campos says that at night his sleep "is light" and during the day he has more time with his family, for reading and interaction with the team.

"I don't think we've even slept, because the concern is very great and this [covid-19 pandemic] was created by us and we have to solve it," he said.

According to the experts, the best way is prevention and "staying at home is better, because it is an evil to which we cannot expose ourselves".

Ivo Campos has been leading the Interclube's main soccer team since 2019, which is currently ranked eighth in the Angolan soccer league with 31 points, a competition that, at the start of the 26th round, has a forced pause due to the pandemic.

Besides Girabola, Interclube is also the semi-finalist of the Angolan Cup.

With the competition cancelled, the coach said he interacts daily with the team through the digital platform, supervises the execution of the players' training plan, mentioning that the athletes send proof of training through short videos.

"At home, the attention is for the child and school duties, the fact of entering school break we always have activities with her, but now I have more time with the family, I have been a coach for 18 years and, as I love to read, I spend more time reading", he stressed.

Regarding the performance of Interclube in this football season, the Portuguese coach says that the team is creating its own identity, stating that it has taken the risk of promoting young athletes, which ensure "solidity" to the group.

"We pull to the main team athletes from the lower echelons and that is our project. Above all we are preparing the team for next year because we are very far, we have to admit, from the top places", he said.

After Mambroa do Huambo, Ivo Campos, who has worked as assistant coach in the team he now leads, has also spent time at Benfica de Luanda and Bravos do Maquis.
