Consumer prices up 1.70 percent in March

Prices in the country rose 1.70 per cent in March, according to a monthly report by the National Statistics Institute (INE) released this Monday.

:

According to the National Consumer Price Index (CPI) Quick Information Sheet, the change in the last 12 months - between April 2019 and March this year - stands at 19.03 per cent, the highest cumulative figure since September 2018.

The "Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages" class registered the highest price increase, with 2.14 per cent, followed by "Miscellaneous Goods and Services", with 1.91 per cent growth, "Leisure, Recreation and Culture", with 1.88 per cent and "Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco", with 1.74 per cent.

The "Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages" class was also, according to INE, "the one that contributed most to the month's inflation rate, with 0.93 percentage points".

According to INE, the provinces that registered the biggest increase were Bengo (3.29 percent), Huíla (2.68 percent), Huambo (2.59 percent) and Namibe (2.48 percent).

On the other hand, the provinces with the smallest variation were Luanda (1.70 percent), Cunene (1.71 percent), Zaire (1.81 percent) and Moxico (1.88 percent).

At the end of March, the consultancy FocusEconomics changed the growth forecast for the Angolan economy, predicting a recession of 1.2 percent this year and warning of "severe economic turbulence" in the coming months due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The consultant estimates that inflation in the country should reach 20.2 percent this year.

The General State Budget for 2020 was drawn up on the basis of an average oil price of 55 dollars, an average daily production of 1,436,900 barrels and an inflation rate of 25 percent.

The covid-19 pandemic has unbalanced a market in which global supply was already in surplus and is now in seldom seen proportions, with travel restrictions taken in all countries to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.

The price of the Brent barrel closed Monday on the London futures market, up 1.2 percent to 31.86 dollars a barrel.
