Namibia accuses Angolan consul-general of violating confinement and travelling to Angola

The Consul General of Angola in Oshakati, Namibia, André Ventura, is accused by the local police of violating the rules of confinement in the country, imposed to stop the spread of covid-19, the Namibian press reported this Monday.

According to the country's police inspector general, Sebastian Ndeitung, quoted by the daily The Namibian, the Angolan diplomat is said to have crossed the border between Namibia and Angola, with the aim of travelling to Santa Clara, Cunene province, having returned on Saturday night.

The announcement was made by the head of the security forces on Sunday, near the border post of Oshikango, noting that the police are looking for the officer who allowed the passage of André Ventura and two Namibians.

The chief of police has ordered the Angolan consul general to spend two weeks in isolation at his home in Osahakati to contain the possible spread of covid-19.

Sebastian Ndeitung added that the two Namibians could not be denied entry, so they will also have to complete a period of isolation.

"I was disturbed when I heard that the consul went to Angola and returned to Namibia. Who opened the borders for him, if they are closed? Find out and tell us who opened the borders for these three," Ndeitunga ordered on Sunday.

He said the police are frustrated that the population is not taking seriously the indications of social isolation, adding that one of the three people who crossed the border was not accompanied by his passport or even an identification card.

To The Namibian, Sebastian Ndeitung clarified that Angolan diplomats must obtain a permit from the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation and only when this has been guaranteed, must they travel, under the pretext of an emergency or the performance of an essential service.

Lusa questioned the Angolan Ministry of Foreign Affairs on this case, but has not received an answer so far.

The regional commander of Omusati, Commissioner Titus Shikongo, said that 56 Angolans had crossed the border due to health issues, while 16 had entered the country illegally.

He added that a member of the Okasamene border post was arrested for violating the immigration control law.

According to the latest figures from the African Union Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), Namibia has accounted for 16 cases since the outbreak of the pandemic, eight of which have been considered recovered.

Neighbouring Angola has a total of 27 cases of infection with the new coronavirus, responsible for covid-19, including two deaths and six recovered cases.

Data from Africa CDC still records 31,933 cases of the disease in 52 African countries, with 1,423 deaths. The total number of recovered patients is 9,566.
