Banks with net assets of 1.5 billion kwanzas required to finance small and medium-sized enterprises

Banks that closed their 2019 accounts with net assets of 1.5 billion kwanzas or more will now be obliged to allocate credits to small and medium-sized enterprises. However, for the financing to be accepted, companies must produce one of the 54 products defined by the Programme to Support Production, Diversification of Exports and Import Substitution (Prodesi).

The remaining banks, which have closed accounts with net assets of less than 1.5 billion kwanzas, will have to allocate at least 25 new credits to companies that meet Prodesi requirements.

These two new rules are part of a set of 35 measures analysed this Thursday in the context of the covid-19 pandemic. The package was finally given the green light by the Economic Committee of the Council of Ministers, writes the Novo Jornal.

These funds will be withdrawn from the mandatory reserves, explained José de Lima Massano, governor of the National Bank of Angola (BNA). According to the official, the credits should be allocated during this year and should be "a minimum of 2.5 percent of each bank's total net assets".

As for the cost of the credit, it could not exceed 7.5 percent, he said, adding that for this year of 2020 "around 300 billion kwanzas will be allocated to the 54 products that are part of PRODESI's priority list".
