General João Luís Neto ‘Xietu’ dies in Luanda at the age of 81

Army General João Luís Neto ‘Xietu’ died this Wednesday in Luanda, aged 81.

The Luanda provincial delegation of the Social Security Institute of the Angolan Armed Forces (ISSFAA) announced the death of the former Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola (FAPLA) with "great pain and consternation".

"With great pain and consternation, we have the duty to communicate the physical passing of Army General João Luís Neto 'Xietu', first director of the extinct Social Security Fund of the Angolan Armed Forces, currently the Social Security Institute of the Angolan Armed Forces", reads a brief note shared by the delegation and to which VerAngola had access.

In the note, the ISSFAA delegation from Luanda addressed "simple feelings of condolence" to the general's family.

According to the National Radio of Angola (RNA), the general died at the Girassol Clinic.

Born on February 8, 1944, 'Xietu' was 81 years old. He was one of the figures linked to the guerrilla movement of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), as well as one of the signatories of the manifesto that created the FAPLA.
