The announcement was made after a telephone conversation between Yván Gil and his Angolan counterpart Tete António.
“Today I had a productive telephone conversation with the Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tete António. On behalf of President Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan people, I congratulated Angola for assuming the Presidency (...) of the African Union, a recognition in the year of the 50th anniversary of its independence,” Yván Gil announced on Instagram.
On the same platform, the Venezuelan minister explained that, “together, they seek to build a multipolar world of peace and security.”
“We highlighted Angola’s leadership in promoting unity and stability in Africa, noting its efforts to promote peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan. We also reviewed the state of our bilateral and multilateral cooperation, reaffirming our commitment to advancing in areas such as energy and mining, as well as to deepening relations between the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States and the African Union,” he explains.
According to the Venezuelan press, Angola and Venezuela established diplomatic relations in December 1986.
In February 2023, they signed a General Agreement on Economic, Commercial, Scientific, Technical and Cultural Cooperation, with the aim of deepening bilateral ties and cooperation.
