Carolina Cerqueira congratulates Aguiar-Branco on his election as president of the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic

The president of parliament, Carolina Cerqueira, congratulated José Pedro Aguiar-Branco on his election as president of the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic, hoping that interparliamentary cooperation relations will be strengthened during his term.

Carolina Cerqueira highlighted, in her message addressed to José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, elected "with a substantial majority of 161 votes", his serenity and democratic spirit, "very important" to ensure a parliament "that maintains its role as the true center of the debate political".

"I take this opportunity to express my desire that, during your mandate, it will be possible to strengthen inter-parliamentary cooperation relations, hoping, from now on, that the commitments and agreements signed between our countries may find new opportunities to consolidate the centuries-old relations between our peoples", she stressed.

According to Carolina Cerqueira, the election of José Pedro Aguiar-Branco "sends a positive signal of necessary political stability".

PSD deputy José Pedro Aguiar-Branco was elected president of the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic on Wednesday with 160 votes in favor, but only on the fourth attempt, after PS and PSD announced an agreement that provides that the social democrats will only they will preside over parliament in the first two legislative sessions, until September 2026, and the socialists will nominate a candidate for the rest of the legislature.
