NGO Omunga speaks of “asphyxiation” of press freedom after suspension of Camunda News

The non-governmental organization (NGO) Omunga lamented the “asphyxiation” of press freedom in Angola due to the “wave of persecution and intimidation” aimed at journalists, pointing to the recent case of Camunda News.

:

“It was with great sadness that Omunga became aware of the possible cancellation of the Camunda News digital TV channel on the YouTube platform and other social networks, that is, Camunda News will stop producing and broadcasting content of an informative and political nature for a period of time. indefinite period”, says the note from Omunga.

The situation represents an "illegal intention", stressed the NGO, stressing that the owner of the company, David Boio, has been the target of intimidating interrogations by the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC).

David Boio told Lusa that he had decided to suspend the broadcast of the 'online' channel due to the pressure he has been subjected to and the feeling of insecurity that affected the entire team, following a program in which the social activist 'Gangsta', accused of criminal association, instigation to rebellion, instigation to civil disobedience and outrage against the President of the Republic.

“In the same vein, we became aware of attempts to coerce and intimidate press journalists and opinion makers on social networks in Benguela province, which demonstrates a clear strategy that aims to curtail the fundamental rights and guarantees of citizens”, denounced Omunga .

For this NGO, it is “an act of heroism for some companies and their owners, due to the wave of persecution and intimidation with the aim of silencing and extinguishing any editorial line that does not satisfy the ruling class”

Omunga appealed to public institutions to stop "these atrocities", in order to allow citizens to contribute to the country's development.

“For this, it is important that freedom and respect for the law are one of the pillars for the creation of a healthy environment between public and private institutions and civil society”, stressed the note.

Omunga also asked the Ministry of Social Communication and New Technologies “to call Camunda News and, once and for all, resolve the alleged problems that it says exist and to stop exercising illegal coercion on Camunda News and others news organizations, as well as individual journalists”.
