UNITA defends challenge to PR mandate for denying institutional crisis

The UNITA secretary general considered, in Luanda, that the President of the Republic denied that the country was experiencing an institutional crisis “would be reason enough to challenge his mandate”.

Álvaro Daniel was speaking at the press conference to launch the commemorations of the 57th anniversary of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), to be celebrated on the 13th.

The politician was referring to the crisis in the judicial system, more specifically with regard to the leaders of the Court of Auditors (TdC) and the Supreme Court, cited in various news reports of the alleged practice of corruption, embezzlement, influence peddling, among other crimes.

"The country does have an unprecedented institutional crisis, because in an attempt to remedy the moral crisis in the Court of Auditors, the holder of executive power had reckless interference, in constitutional terms, by forcing the resignation of the venerable counselor judge president of the Court of Auditors," said Álvaro Daniel.

In an interview with French radio RFI, the Angolan President, João Lourenço, rejected the existence of an institutional crisis in the country, when asked about the situation in these two courts, recognizing, however, that there are problems in the Court of Auditors and investigations that are taking place in the Supreme Court .

"An institutional crisis in the country is very strong to say that, too strong", said João Lourenço.

The resigning president of the TdC, Exalgina Gambôa, resigned on Wednesday to the President of the Republic, informing the Superior Council of the Judiciary, one day after being accused of crimes of extortion, embezzlement and corruption, in a process that also contains her son Hailé Vicente da Cruz, also accused.

On Monday, João Lourenço announced that he had invited Exalgina Gambôa to resign on February 21 due to several "occurrences" that involved her, but the judge only resigned two days later, after asking for early retirement and being accused .

"Our country, under the regime of the party that has ruled for almost 48 years, is experiencing a serious moral crisis in the leadership of the superior courts", said the UNITA secretary general.

According to Álvaro Daniel, "in countries that are truly democratic by law, this act by President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço would be reason enough to challenge his mandate".

For the UNITA secretary general, "Angola is facing an endemic economic crisis for which the current executive cannot find solutions and is deaf to the opinions of other sensitivities, such as academics, politicians and businessmen".

For UNITA, there is a "crisis of lack of political will on the part of President João Lourenço's regime, which is reflected in the refusal to institutionalize local authorities".

"The expedient of the so-called new political-administrative division is an absurd and delaying maneuver that aims to throw local authorities into oblivion", he considered.

To mark the 57 years of the party's existence, the commemorative court begins today and ends on the 31st of this month, with the 5th Congress of the United Revolutionary Youth of Angola (JURA), the party's youth wing, a 'workshop' on the trajectory of the party's struggle and a reflection on the political project of the March 13th Movement, the basis of its society program.
