Covid-19: Portugal extends non-essential travel to the PALOP

The Portuguese Government has extended the possibility of carrying out non-essential trips to people from Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe, announced the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In a statement, the Portuguese executive says he has approved an “amendment to the rules applicable to air traffic within the scope of measures to combat the covid-19 pandemic” that allows travelers from these five Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP) to travel to Portugal on non-essential trips.

Among the PALOP, only Equatorial Guinea is excluded from this authorization.

This change, contained in Order No. ", explains the government.

The five Portuguese-speaking countries join the Member States of the European Union (EU) and the countries associated with the Schengen Area (Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland), as well as Brazil, Canada, the United States of America and the United Kingdom, that were already covered by the same order.

The provisions relating to essential trips, that is, those with professional, study or family reasons, as well as health or humanitarian reasons, remain unchanged.

The rules previously established for entry into mainland Portugal regarding the presentation of covid-19 vaccination or recovery certificates and testing for the SARS-CoV-2 virus also remain in force.

According to the law, passengers who do not have an EU Covid-19 Digital Certificate or another recognized under the law must present, at the time of departure, proof of carrying out a PCR test or rapid antigen test for professional use with a negative result. , carried out within 72 or 24 hours prior to departure time, respectively.

It is up to the airlines to verify these tests.
