BNA will authorize foreign exchange residents to leave the country with national or foreign currency up to 10 thousand dollars

The central bank will authorize, in April, foreign exchange residents to leave the country with national or foreign currency up to 10,000 dollars, a value that reduces to 1,000 dollars for minors under 18 years of age.

The change is contained in notice no. 6/22, of 3 March, of the National Bank of Angola (BNA), which defines the currency outflow limit applicable to individuals, foreign exchange residents and non-residents, who cross the country's border.

This measure, justifies the National Bank of Angola, responds to the prevention and fight against money laundering and terrorist financing, with an impact on the transport of money in the form of cash.

The notice also defines situations that require travelers to fill in a declaration form for the entry of currency into the country.

Individuals, foreign exchange residents and non-residents, who bring national or foreign currency in total value equal to or greater than 10,000 US dollars are subject to this obligation.

This value must be declared by filling in the declaration form provided by the customs services.

"The declaration form available at the customs services upon entry into the country must be completed and signed by the traveler and delivered to the said services, which validate the information on the form, retain the original and deliver the duplicate to the traveller", reads the notice.

Individuals who are not foreign exchange residents may carry foreign currency at the exit of the country in an amount equal to the currency with which they entered the country, subject to proof of entry of that value, through the delivery of the duplicate of the declaration of entry of currency to the customs services on exit.

According to the document, the border authorities, within the scope of their powers, may condition the exit of national or foreign currency, regardless of whether the amounts comply with the limits regulated in this notice, whenever the traveler is suspected of any criminal offense, under the legislation in force.

The notice defines as foreign exchange residents natural persons who have their habitual residence in the country, national citizens, diplomats, consular representatives or similar persons exercising their functions abroad, as well as the members of their respective families, natural persons whose absence abroad for a period of more than 90 days and less than one year originates from studies or is determined by the exercise of public functions.

All foreign citizens residing in Angola and holders of a residence card are also included in the category of foreign exchange residents.

As for foreign exchange non-residents, the document considers individuals with habitual residence abroad, national individuals who emigrate, as well as those who are absent from the national territory for a period longer than one year, diplomats, consular representatives or the like, in the exercise of their functions. national territory and the members of their families.
