Petro and 1.º de Agosto receive 62.5 thousand dollars from CAF to "reduce financial burden" with competitions

The African Football Confederation (CAF) will grant monetary aid, worth 62.5 thousand dollars, to Petro de Luanda and 1.º de Agosto. The amount is to help the clubs that, with covid-19, had to make a greater effort to participate in African competitions.

"With the aim of reducing the financial burden on clubs participating in competitions, CAF has decided to allocate a financial award to help teams during the covid-19 pandemic. The support is for the clubs in competition and those that were eliminated in the second round of the Confederations Cup and Champions League preliminaries," the confederation said in a statement, cited by Jornal de Angola.

The CAF explains that the monetary aid will be available to all teams that have marked or are present in the competitions, emphasizing that even teams that have already been eliminated will also receive this support. This is the case of 1.º de Agosto that was eliminated in the initial phase of the Champions League and recently removed from the Confederation Cup.

In 2018, 1.º de Agosto had a very good performance in the African 'Champions'. The club reached the semi-final of the competition, and netted about $650,000 in prize money. However, not even the amount collected about three years ago motivated the club to repeat the performance this year.

Petro de Luanda, on the other hand, managed to amass with the group phase of the Champions League about 550 thousand dollars. The value could have increased if the team had scored a point in the first games of the group stage.

For the current competitions, Club League and Confederation Cup, CAF provided US$4.5 million.
