Portuguese construction companies to help collect garbage in Luanda for free

The Provincial Government of Luanda (GPL) will count on the support of Portuguese construction companies, among others, for the free collection of tons of garbage accumulated in the capital, a source from one of the companies said.

:

The request was made last week during a meeting with the GPL where construction companies from several countries, including Portuguese, Chinese and other nationalities were present, and was welcomed by companies that were available to collaborate, said the same source.

The GPL technicians have already defined, in coordination with the companies, the areas in which each construction company will operate, and this intervention must continue until the new waste collection contracts come into force.

The waste accumulated over the past few months on the streets, roads and neighborhoods of Luanda has raised concerns among citizens about public health and has also caused restrictions on circulation, which have been aggravated by last week's torrential rains.

On the Bungo-Viana section railway line, the large amount of debris deposited on the rails even led the direction of the Luanda Railways to admit temporarily suspending the circulation of trains.

To control the situation, army forces, as well as some 3,500 police officers, were deployed to carry out cleaning work over the past weekend.

In December 2020, the governor of Luanda province, Joana Lina, announced the suspension of contracts with waste management companies due to the inability to continue to honor their commitments.

In February of this year, the President allocated 44 million for the removal of garbage in Luanda, which has faced difficulties since the time of the suspension of contracts with operators in management of cleaning and collection of waste, with piles of garbage being found in all areas. province, a situation strongly contested by the citizens.

The debt with the garbage collection companies in Luanda amounted to 308 million until November last year.

To minimize the current situation, cleaning campaigns have been carried out by residents, with the burning of garbage heaped along roads and neighborhoods one of the solutions to circumvent the smell and the amount of worms.

Two weeks ago, the GPL announced that it had received proposals from 39 companies to collect solid waste in the capital.
