Dondo: 25 years later ex-Satec resumes fabric production and employs 1500 people

Now called Comandante Bula, the former Satec resumed production at the beginning of the week, after a quarter of a century of stoppage. The textile factory, located in Dondo, municipality of Cambambe, in the province of Cuanza Norte, employed 1500 citizens in this re-start.

The factory has two production lines, occupying an area of 88 thousand square meters, with services for spinning, knitting, dyeing, finishing, making clothes and an area for the manufacture of denim fabrics.

The first line foresees the monthly production of 180 thousand t-shirts and 200 polo shirts. The second line, on the other hand, may launch around 500 thousand linear meters of jeans fabric, according to Angop.

The full operation of the unit may double the number of direct jobs, with the opening of 600 new vacancies expected by the end of the year.

Paralyzed since 1996, the reopening of the former Satec marks the beginning of the reactivation process of the Cambambe Industrial Pole. The unit is now managed by the industrial group Boabad Cotton Group, from Zimbabwe, which won the public tender open for the asset in 2020. The exploration has a term of 15 years, and from the tenth year of management, entrepreneurs have the option purchase of the unit.

At the factory relaunching ceremony was the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Victor Fernandes, who highlighted the investment opportunities that the industrial unit may bring. The holder of the Industry portfolio also recalled that the manufacturing unit may come to boost not only the textile sector but also the agricultural sector, by investing in cotton production.

Adriano Mendes de Carvalho, governor of Cuanza Norte, highlighted the importance of the Cambambe Industrial Pole in collecting tax revenues for the province.

It is recalled that Satec was initially an Italian investment, installed in the country in 1967. The factory operated from 1970 to 1996 with about 1200 workers.

The industrial group Baobab also won the tender for the management of the textile factory in Benguela, whose re-launch took place in February. On the occasion, the group's representative, Laurence Zlattnerante, referred that the entrepreneurs are willing to cooperate with the Government through the purchase of local products, inserted in the industrial chain.

According to Angop, the initial objective is to acquire close to 500 metric tons of cotton / month, from Zimbabwe, Malawi and South Africa, to ensure production. However, in the short term, the group wants the production of this raw material to be local, replacing imports.
