Covid-19: Africa with 319 more dead and 7971 more infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 319 more covid-19-associated deaths in the past 24 hours, for a total of 112,238 since the pandemic began, and 7971 new cases of infection, according to the latest official data on the continent.

According to the African Union Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of infected in the organization's 55 member states is 4,195,068 and the number recovered in the last 24 hours is 61,477, for a total of 3,754,469 since the start of the pandemic.

The number of recoveries was revised sharply downward this Monday and this Tuesday seems to suggest an equally sharp upward revision. Comparing the numbers of cases of recovery from infection reported by the Africa CDC this Tuesday and last Sunday, the trend is 4660 new cases of recovery in 48 hours.

Southern Africa remains the worst affected region, with 1,905,511 people infected and 59,910 deaths associated with being infected with the disease. Within this region, South Africa, the country worst hit by covid-19 on the continent, records 1,545,979 cases and 52,710 deaths.

North Africa is the second hardest hit by the pandemic, with 1,238,982 infected and 35,676 fatalities.

East Africa counts 492,818 infections and 8908 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 431,661 and the number of deaths is 5661. Central Africa has 126,096 cases and 2083 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths after South Africa, has 11,914 deaths and 200,739 infected, followed by Morocco with 8807 deaths and 494,756 cases.

Among the most affected countries are also Tunisia, with 8760 deaths and 251,169 cases, Algeria, with 3084 deaths and 116,854 infected, and Ethiopia, with 2825 deaths and 202,545 infections.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique records 769 deaths and 67,292 cases, followed by Angola (534 deaths and 22,132 cases of infection), Cape Verde (165 deaths and 17,190 cases), Equatorial Guinea (102 deaths and 6914 cases), Guinea-Bissau (61 deaths and 3634 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (34 deaths and 2215 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 2,784,276 deaths worldwide, resulting from more than 127 million cases of infection, according to an assessment by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
