According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the total number of infected in the 55 member states of the organization is 4,041,835 and that of recovered in the last 24 hours is 40,993, for one total of 3,630,060 since the beginning of the pandemic.
Southern Africa continues to be the most affected region, with 1,873,691 infected and 58,284 killed by contagion with the disease. In this region, South Africa, the country hardest hit by the covid-19 on the continent, records 1,530,033 cases and 51,421 deaths.
North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 1,201,672 infected and 34,372 fatalities.
East Africa accounts for 440,548 infections and 8,128 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 413,088 and that of deaths is 5392. Central Africa has 112,836 cases and 1888 deaths.
Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 11,340 deaths and 191,555 infected, followed by Morocco, with 8733 deaths and 489,096 cases.
Among the countries most affected are also Tunisia, with 8,404 deaths and 242,124 cases, Algeria, with 3042 deaths and 115,318 infected, and Ethiopia, with 2555 fatalities and 176,618 infections.
Regarding Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique records 729 deaths and 64,642 cases, followed by Angola (521 deaths and 21,407 cases of infection), Cape Verde (156 deaths and 16,120 cases), Equatorial Guinea (100 deaths and 6603 cases) , Guinea-Bissau (53 dead and 3447 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (32 dead and 2057 cases).
