Portuguese Ambassador to Angola reaffirms commitment to access vaccines

The Portuguese ambassador to Angola reaffirmed the Portuguese commitment to the access of the PALOP to vaccines and considered the arrival of the first doses to Angola “a very important sign” of the position of the Portuguese-speaking country in the fight against the covid-19.

Pedro Pessoa e Costa, who was speaking to Lusa on the sidelines of the inauguration of the central vaccine depot in Luanda, where the first doses of vaccines against covid-19 were administered in the country, highlighted the "great moment", not only because Angola received the vaccines, but also for the inauguration of the logistical infrastructures that will receive the immunizing materials.

The Minister of Health, Silvia Lutucuta, inaugurated the central vaccine deposit of Angola, on the day the first 624,000 doses of vaccines against covid-19 arrived in the country, within the scope of the Covax initiative, and in which the first Angolans were vaccinated. against the disease.

For Pedro Pessoa and Costa this is "a very important sign of how Angola has positioned itself", having managed "in record time and always continuing its fight against the pandemic" to create these infrastructures and start vaccination.

Angola was the first Portuguese-speaking country to receive vaccines within the scope of Covax, "a sign that it is serious about fighting this pandemic that concerns everyone", considered the diplomat.

The ambassador also stressed that Portugal "will always be willing to support the African continent and Angola", recalling that the Prime Minister, António Costa, recently announced that 5 percent of vaccines contracted in the European Union will be destined for Portuguese-speaking African countries. (PALOP) and Timor-Leste.

The diplomat also highlighted the importance of solidarity "in difficult times" being done in a concrete way, stating that Portugal contributes actively and financially to the Covax initiative, led by the Gavi alliance, an international organization currently chaired by Durão Barroso, by the Coalition for Innovation Epidemic Preparation (Cepi) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The first vaccines arrived at Luanda International Airport this Tuesday morning, and started to be administered to a selected group of 50 people, including health professionals, defense and security agencies and patients with comorbidities.
