Covid-19: Portugal says it is negotiating repatriation of PALOP citizens

The Portuguese Government says that it is negotiating the possibility of repatriation of citizens who have requested their return from the PALOP, despite the restrictions placed by some African countries, in the fight against Covid-19.

:

“We have been in contact with all the PALOP [African Portuguese Speaking Countries] asking two questions: how many are the Portuguese who want to return; if flights are allowed for your return ”, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Augusto Santos Silva, speaking to Lusa.

Santos Silva says that he has already received the green light from Cape Verde, for the repatriation of Portuguese who want to return, despite the restrictions that that country is placing on the entry and exit of foreigners, as measures to contain the spread of the new coronavirus.

Angola and Guinea also have restrictions on external mobility and have not yet responded to the Portuguese Government on the possibilities for the Portuguese to return, whose number the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE) is unable to estimate at this time.

"I have not yet had any response from the Government of Guinea. And, in relation to Angola, requests have only been made today, so I have only started contacts with the Government of Luanda," explained Santos Silva.

The minister says that until now he had the support of TAP for the repatriation operations of Portuguese-speaking countries, but he was informed that the Portuguese airline canceled flights to Africa and was limiting connections with Brazil, which remained confined to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

Thus, the MNE says it will study the options for repatriation operations that may be requested, admitting that the number of requests will increase as the number of cases of contamination in these countries increases, which for now remains at low levels.
