Namibian Ambassador says vast border with Angola remains open

The Government of Namibia keeps the vast border with Angola open, despite registering positive cases of the new coronavirus, the press reported this Tuesday, quoting the Namibian ambassador in Angola, Patrick Nandango.

According to the Namibian diplomat, who was speaking to the press on Monday, quoted by the Jornal de Angola, the Angolan airline TAAG is allowed to fly regularly to his country, despite the entry ban imposed on other airlines.

Namibia has recorded two positive cases of the new coronavirus detected in two foreign nationals quarantined in Namibia.

To prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, whose new epicentre is Europe, Patrick Nandango reported that celebrations of the country's 30 years of independence and the inauguration of President-elect Hage Geingob will take place under restrictive measures.

The inauguration ceremony for the Namibian President, scheduled for 21 March, is expected to take place with few foreign guests.

Some 30 African countries have already recorded positive cases of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Angola, which has no record of positive cases of the new coronavirus, maintains a ban on foreign nationals from China, South Korea, Iran and Italy, admitting to "extend or reduce" the list as the pandemic evolves.

The epidemiological surveillance plan is being developed, especially at the points of entry with actions to raise awareness and protect the population.
