Japan provides half a million dollars to support nutrition and vaccination in Angola

Japan has provided more than half a million dollars to support the nutrition and immunization of children in Cunene Prefecture, a region affected by drought, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) announced this Tuesday.

:

A statement, to which the Lusa agency had access, states that the 545,000 dollars in support will be transferred to UNICEF, with the portion going to the area of nutrition benefiting at least 38,000 people, including children and women in the municipality of Ombandja, one of the most affected by the drought.

"Through this funding to UNICEF, the Government of Japan wants to strengthen its commitment to creating a favourable environment for the integral development of each child, particularly those who live in situations that increase their vulnerability," said the Japanese Ambassador to Angola, Hironori Sawada, quoted in the note.

With these funds, the United Nations organization intends to support the authorities of Cunene province to ensure that around 16,000 children under the age of five have access to prevention and screening of acute malnutrition and around 12,000 school-age children benefit from deworming actions.

The funding also goes towards the purchase of nutritional supplements and dewormers for schoolchildren and the training of around 30 teachers, who will carry out nutritional surveillance and advise on good feeding practices for babies and young children.

Financial support is also reserved for immunisation actions in the municipalities of Cacuaco and Viana, in the province of Luanda, capital of Angola, with a focus on training vaccination technicians and health promotion officers at community level, so that they can be ready to respond to any outbreak and mobilise the population to join vaccination campaigns.

"With this funding, we have another example of multiple efforts among partners, with the main objective of meeting the needs of the populations most affected by the various emergencies that occur in the country," said the acting UNICEF representative in Angola, Jean François Basse.
