Luanda: two pharmacists arrested for price speculation

Two pharmacists were arrested in Luanda for doubling the price of covid-19 protection products, such as alcohol-gel and gloves, according to the National Institute for Consumer Protection (Inadec), guaranteeing "criminal liability".

In an information note sent to Lusa, Inadec states that the arrests took place over the weekend, in the urban district of Camama, in Luanda, when they found that the alcohol-gel previously sold at 2050 kwanzas was costing 4900 kwanzas.

In another pharmacy, in the same location, a box of gloves was costing 10,000 kwanzas against the previous 2,245 kwanzas, which led to the arrest of pharmacists for crimes of speculation.

As a consequence, the police ordered the arrest of those responsible for those pharmacies with a view to opening a case "for subsequent criminal liability".

In inspection actions, the note said, Inadec teams are on "permanent and uninterrupted" service in the 18 provinces, with visits to commercial establishments and pharmacies already found to be "adulterated in prices".

During the past week, the National Institute for Consumer Protection also found irregularities in hygienic and sanitary conditions in 13 establishments.
In a balance sheet on the activities carried out during the month of March, the public institution emphasizes that it carried out 416 verification visits in various establishments across the country, registered 63 complaints, 225 infringements, 22 seizures of various products and two actions of destruction.
