The latest report published by OCHA warns that “many dead bodies continue to cover the city’s streets”.
This Monday marks a week since, after several days of intense fighting, the M23 managed to occupy the strategic city of Goma, capital of the province of North Kivu, with around two million inhabitants and where non-governmental organizations are based. international governmental and United Nations institutions.
According to UN experts, M23 is supported by around 4,000 troops from neighboring Rwanda, far more than in 2012 when they first captured Goma.
The rebel movement is the most powerful of more than 100 armed groups vying for control of eastern DR Congo, Angola's mineral-rich neighbor, which has vast deposits essential for much of the world's technology.
