Parliament elected two new judges to the Constitutional Court

Parliament unanimously approved this Thursday the election of jurists Amélia Augusto Varela and Emiliana Margareth Morais Nangacovie as advisory judges of the Constitutional Court (TC), nominated by the MPLA and UNITA, respectively.

Amélia Augusto Varela was nominated by the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) to replace Judge Maria da Conceição Almeida Songo, who has completed her term in that court.

Emiliana Margareth Morais Nangacovie, a professor at the Catholic University of Angola, was nominated by the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) to replace Judge Josefa dos Santos Neto, who is retired after turning 70.

Both nominations were unanimously approved this Thursday by the plenary of parliament during the plenary session, when the now judge Emiliana Margareth Morais Nangacovie was introduced.

Judge Amélia Augusto Varela was absent from this session "for reasons of force majeure", justified the president of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira.

The plenary of the Constitutional Court is composed of 11 judges appointed from among jurists and magistrates, namely four appointed by the President of the Republic, including the presiding judge, and four elected by parliament by a majority of 2/3 of the deputies in active service.

The Superior Council of the Judiciary elects two judges and another is selected by means of a selection process.

The judges of the Constitutional Court are appointed for a non-renewable seven-year term and enjoy guarantees of independence, irremovability and impartiality.
