PR swears in deputy prosecutors and asks them to help “make criminals pay society for the evils they have done”

The President of the Republic swore in, this Friday, the new deputy attorneys general of the Attorney General's Office (PGR). At the ceremony, which took place in the Grand Hall of the Presidential Palace, João Lourenço said that he had confidence in the people who had been sworn in, “in their ability, so that they can help Angolan society to free itself – in the sense of doing justice – and make criminals pay society for the evils they have done”.

"We are holding this inauguration ceremony to increase the working capacity of an important body of our Justice system, which is the Attorney General's Office, since our Criminal Investigation Services have recently increased the number of crime discoveries," began the head of state.

João Lourenço pointed out that "cases of various crimes that are solved by the Criminal Investigation Services have increased considerably, crimes committed not only by national citizens, but, unfortunately, even by foreign citizens".

"And we are concerned, above all, about some types of crimes that have the greatest impact on our society. To name just a few: the increase in cases of fuel smuggling, vandalism of public property, violent crime, homicides, rape of minors, domestic violence," he added.

In his speech, released by CIPRA and to which VerAngola had access, the President of the Republic also alluded to a "new type of crime", which involves cryptocurrency mining.

"But on top of all this, there is a new type of crime, which was not common in our society, which is cryptocurrency mining. It is a crime that has been growing and that needs to receive the necessary attention and firmness from the justice system so that it does not spread," he said.

According to João Lourenço, the PGR, as the Public Prosecutor's Office, "which has the mission of preparing the cases that are sent for judgment, for the courts, has an important role".

Therefore, he said that they are expected to have "all possible dedication" in order to speed up the processes. "We hope that they will be as dedicated as possible to speed up the processes. That they do not stay too long at the PGR, that those cases that have to go to court are forwarded within a reasonable time to the competent courts. Obviously, not all of them will be," he said.

He also said he trusted the newly appointed: "We trust the people we are appointing today, in their ability, so that they can help Angolan society to free itself - in the sense of doing justice - and make criminals pay to society for the evils they have done."

Finally, he wished everyone "great success" in carrying out their new duties.

In addition to the nine deputy attorneys general, in another act, three secretaries of state, 11 provincial vice-governors and two members of Boards of Directors were also sworn in this Friday.

On the occasion, João Lourenço congratulated them and wished them success for the future.

"We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Secretaries of State, the Vice-Governors, the non-executive director of the BNA..., for the trust that has been placed in you to assume, from now on, new responsibilities, new functions", he said, adding: "We hope that, in the exercise of these new functions, you will be very successful, for the good of the institutions that you will serve, but [above all] for the good of our country, Angola".
