According to José Chicomo, head of the provincial department of the Huíla Veterinary Services Institute, this is a production focused on poultry farms in Lubango, Cuvango, Caluquembe, Humpata, Chibia and Matala.
As for 2023, the manager reported that 523,921 eggs were produced, having clarified that this information is related to a semester, given that production had been interrupted due to obstacles in the purchase of feed and import of chicks.
Speaking to Angop, Chicomo stressed that, to increase production at provincial level, it is necessary to install feed manufacturing units, given that poultry farmers still need to buy it from other provinces at high costs and, although some adjust the animals' feed, productivity ends up not being the same.
Other difficulties that discourage poultry farmers from farming in the province, highlighted by the official, include obtaining breeding stock from Namibia and Portugal, the workforce and maintaining infrastructure.
According to Angop, poultry meat production reached 78,777 kilos, from more than 43 thousand birds, which represents about three percent of the annual demand, established at more than three million kilos.
While in 2023, meat production stood at 1697 kilos, coming from 943 birds, representing 0.05 percent of annual demand.
According to José Chicomo, a financing project to promote poultry farming is underway, focusing on the production of poultry meat, and the initiative is in the stage of selecting potential producers to increase the quantity, writes Angop.
Regarding imports, in the period in question, 19,750, 17,920 and 4980 kilos of hard chicken, thighs and chicken were imported, respectively.
